Dental Care During Pregnancy

You’re pregnant! You’ve got a million things on your mind, and we get that the dentist isn’t the first doctor you’re worried about visiting. However, it’s important to keep up with your oral health while pregnant.

Preventative dental cleanings and annual exams during pregnancy are not only safe but are recommended. During pregnancy, the changing hormone levels can leave your mouth more vulnerable to bacteria and plaque, both of which create tender gums. This can also put you at greater risk for tooth decay and gum disease.

According to The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), poor oral health can also have a potential effect on your unborn child. There is evidence linking gum disease with pregnancy complications, such as preterm birth, low birth weight and preeclampsia.

If you find yourself needing dental work while pregnant, some experts suggest that you avoid having work done during your first and third trimesters. However, research has shown that dental work done during the second trimester is safe for both the mother and the child.Elective treatments, such as teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures, should be postponed until after the birth.

As you begin this exciting journey, don’t neglect your oral health. It’s important to see your dentist to address any dental issues during pregnancy. You’re going to be smiling a lot, and we want your smile to stay beautiful!
